I had considered buying them but I already have the summer tires on the stock rims so I just bought rims and winter tires. I am an avid believer in the right tools for the job and I would like to get some feedback on the hancooks before I sink hard earned money into them. I think they are a great idea if they do what they claim, and not changing tires makes life a lot easier. Actually anything I dont have to do is a bonus.

I considered them strongly, with the buy 3 get 4 deal (and card financing, 12 mos. payments), but be careful of installation. If their techs break the TPM they will try to get you to pay for it - very expensive. Going to the dealer, with warranty coverage, is best if they have a good deal. My dealer had lots of winter tires on sale, name brands.

  • NISSAN CUBE® CONVOY TURNS HEADS IN TORONTO   28 weeks 1 day ago

If there is any possibility of organizing a Cube event in Vancouver in 2012, I'd be interested, and I would also corral the half-dozen or so Cubes in the Comox Valley to come along. In a city like Vancouver, I would hope to get several dozen owners to participate. The one hitch is that with no Cubes to import this year (tsunami), Nissan might not support an event, especially since they have thrown their marketing behind the Juke now. It would be a shame to see what was once the most distinctive and original car on the road (just 2 1/2 years ago!) be sidelined as a result of manufacturer disinterest. It's happened before.

  • all-season tires   28 weeks 1 day ago

It is supposed to be worse than normal even in B.C. (another La Nina year), and I don't want to total my '09 as I haven't seen any sign of 2012 models, and hear there won't be any due to the tsunami. The upside is that a Cube is a rarer sight on the roads, though I like having company.

Great tip,Dan! When I bought my steel rims and tires I didnt buy TPMs. My wife and I both agreed that the little light wouldn't bother either one of us, and I usually check both cars at least twice a month. The stock rims and tires are now safely in the basement(when you turn the cars on the light isn't on the tires are close enough to the cars outside that the lights dont come on till you leave the driveway. I thought that was pretty funny!) And yes they are expensive! Now I have to find some cheap hubcaps...

That seems to cover the 15 vs. 16 inch question!
I also suggest that if you ever take your Cube with the Tire Pressure Monitor system in to ANYWHERE to have any tires mounted & balanced on any rims that you ensure that the technician confirms that the sender unit is intact & working beforehand. Obviously if your Cube is still under the 3-Year Warranty, and you are at your Dealer, the issue is moot.
But, ask the Parts Manager at your local Nissan dealer how many calls they are getting for new units from the various tire outlets at this time of year, and it will be several per day. Most tire shops treat the rims with the unit inside like any other, and do not properly unscrew the outside nut first (letting it drop into the inside of the tire), so when they go to remove the tire from the rim it shatters the unit. Of course, they then tell you it was busted when you came in, order another 1 - 4 from the dealer (if in stock) and charge you for it. But those puppies are about $100 a pop, plus programming, so don't get ripped off!

Right on all counts Dan, and they use TONS of salt in Ontario. I have had a few occasions last winter where traction control and the Cubes VDC helped greatly to maintain control with the stock Toyos. Also after further investigation into the winter tire issue, found out from Nissan and the local tire shops, the 195/60R15 is the same circumference as the 195/55R16. Nissan dealer price on winter steel rims and winter tires was $1100.00 for four. The best deal I found wasnt the Nexens and the Costco rims(Walmart charges extra for mount and balance AND to change over the rims and Costco only sells the multi-fit rims in 15 inch and they dont fit the Cube. The calipers rub on the rims.) The tire shop I went with took the time to test fit the rims and had to order the proper ones and the tires I bought are Sailun Iceblazer WST-1 195/65R15. Total for EIGHT rims and EIGHT tires(We have two Cubes) was $1220.00. Thanks to Taunton Tire for putting in the extra effort and working with me to keep cos down while providing me with an above average tire for extreme snow service. I dont like the stock 16 inch size either they are almost double the price of more common 15 and 16 inch sizes. Have fun in the snow, I know I will!

Right, sorry. Your advice is better, since you can easily go down in size for winter rims & tires - though your speedo will be off, but in fact look like you are going FASTER. As for rims, or even changing over to begin with, as I said: I am in BC, and winter on the coast is nothing. They seldom even salt the roads, so cars (and equipment) last a long time. Anywhere else and I would definitely consider the option of change-over. The traction control does work wonders when icy though, as my Versa couldn't make it up the hills that the Cube has no problem with. Also, I find the Continentals to be a good All-season tire.
And my original tires were the Toyo 195/55-16, which I didn't like at all.

  • all-season tires   29 weeks 5 days ago

Quite a good deal from the dealer with mount and balance. Are the rims 16 inch? I went looking for winter tires and found that no one keeps that odd tire size in stock and they are VERY expensive. I got an alternative rim and tire size 195/60R15 for winter tire pricing. Most tire shops around oshawa are $1300. for steel rims and winter tires. If you buy 15 inch steel rims from canadian tire,$45.00 each and Nexen Winguard winter tires 195/60R15 from Walmart the total is about $1100. This also means you dont use your aluminum rims in the winter and they will look good longer. If anyone has a better price or idea I would love to see it on here. thanks,Rob

  • PROBLEMS   29 weeks 6 days ago

I replaced my Toyo's at 40 k as well; I didn't think they'd get me through the winter. The tire size (195/55-16) is an odd one, only on Nissan Cube's and a few others. However, my dealer had some ContiProContacts in stock @ $149/ea. Installation and balance was $72, so the total was less than $700 with tax (in BC). The parts manager has the same tires on his 2012 Versa sedan, so that is good. If you need a winter tire in a snowy region, you might want to look at a specialty (snowflake) tire with rims and change them over every 6 mos. I also recommend getting the work done at the dealer, because of the TPM. If another shop busts one of those, you are looking at over $100, plus programming, and the shop will likely say it was broken when you brought the car in so that you have to pay for it. The joys of dealer servicing of a unique car under warranty are costly, but worth it at least until you have no recourse of a claim anymore. If you want to go cheap, drive a '75 Silverado with a 350 and Turbohydramatic tranny. Any backyard joe can fix one of those in a hour for $20.

  • Weird Electrical Problem   29 weeks 6 days ago

Nissan put out a TSB just last month on that problem; it is the steering lock, an electronic controller that shuts down the ignition if it believes it is being tampered with. If you are the original owner, you should have gotten a letter, or been notified from the dealer when it was last in for service. There is no way you can start the car with a defective one.

I heard that they are thinking about not importing them for 2012, but nothing is set in stone yet.

  • Gas Mileage   31 weeks 4 days ago

That is funny because thats what I had before I bought mine. I had a 3.8 in mine,it was a gas hog but tons of power. I put a Magnaflow muffler on my Cube and I am looking into building a cold air intake for it too. The Magnaflow is louder than the stock exhaust but improves horsepower and fuel economy about 15%. The cold air intake should improve both about the same as well. Mine came with the six speaker premium stereo and subwoofer so it is not too boring sitting in traffic. I drive from Oshawa to Bowmanville every day and I use about 40 bucks a week in gas to go back and forth to work. My grand caravan used about 85 bucks a week and the Cube is WAY more fun to drive.

  • Gas Mileage   32 weeks 19 hours ago

Thanks Rob. I 'm stuck in the city most of the time, sadly, but will be doing some longer trips the next few weeks. I'll be sure to try the cruise. As it is, my Cube is using WAY less gas than my Grand Caravan was and I'm pleased. Mine came with a satellite radio receiver and I got a subscription - I'm actually not too fussed about sitting in traffic now.
