all-season tires

I just replaced my original Toyo tires with some ContiProContact's I got from the dealer. The Toyo's only had 43,000 k on them but looked too poor for winter driving. I paid a total of $680 at the dealer for the 4 tires, balance & mounting, and tax. Good/bad?

Any one think about trying these tires? What do you think

I had considered buying them but I already have the summer tires on the stock rims so I just bought rims and winter tires. I am an avid believer in the right tools for the job and I would like to get some feedback on the hancooks before I sink hard earned money into them. I think they are a great idea if they do what they claim, and not changing tires makes life a lot easier. Actually anything I dont have to do is a bonus.

I considered them strongly, with the buy 3 get 4 deal (and card financing, 12 mos. payments), but be careful of installation. If their techs break the TPM they will try to get you to pay for it - very expensive. Going to the dealer, with warranty coverage, is best if they have a good deal. My dealer had lots of winter tires on sale, name brands.

That seems to cover the 15 vs. 16 inch question!
I also suggest that if you ever take your Cube with the Tire Pressure Monitor system in to ANYWHERE to have any tires mounted & balanced on any rims that you ensure that the technician confirms that the sender unit is intact & working beforehand. Obviously if your Cube is still under the 3-Year Warranty, and you are at your Dealer, the issue is moot.
But, ask the Parts Manager at your local Nissan dealer how many calls they are getting for new units from the various tire outlets at this time of year, and it will be several per day. Most tire shops treat the rims with the unit inside like any other, and do not properly unscrew the outside nut first (letting it drop into the inside of the tire), so when they go to remove the tire from the rim it shatters the unit. Of course, they then tell you it was busted when you came in, order another 1 - 4 from the dealer (if in stock) and charge you for it. But those puppies are about $100 a pop, plus programming, so don't get ripped off!

Great tip,Dan! When I bought my steel rims and tires I didnt buy TPMs. My wife and I both agreed that the little light wouldn't bother either one of us, and I usually check both cars at least twice a month. The stock rims and tires are now safely in the basement(when you turn the cars on the light isn't on the tires are close enough to the cars outside that the lights dont come on till you leave the driveway. I thought that was pretty funny!) And yes they are expensive! Now I have to find some cheap hubcaps...

Quite a good deal from the dealer with mount and balance. Are the rims 16 inch? I went looking for winter tires and found that no one keeps that odd tire size in stock and they are VERY expensive. I got an alternative rim and tire size 195/60R15 for winter tire pricing. Most tire shops around oshawa are $1300. for steel rims and winter tires. If you buy 15 inch steel rims from canadian tire,$45.00 each and Nexen Winguard winter tires 195/60R15 from Walmart the total is about $1100. This also means you dont use your aluminum rims in the winter and they will look good longer. If anyone has a better price or idea I would love to see it on here. thanks,Rob

Right, sorry. Your advice is better, since you can easily go down in size for winter rims & tires - though your speedo will be off, but in fact look like you are going FASTER. As for rims, or even changing over to begin with, as I said: I am in BC, and winter on the coast is nothing. They seldom even salt the roads, so cars (and equipment) last a long time. Anywhere else and I would definitely consider the option of change-over. The traction control does work wonders when icy though, as my Versa couldn't make it up the hills that the Cube has no problem with. Also, I find the Continentals to be a good All-season tire.
And my original tires were the Toyo 195/55-16, which I didn't like at all.

Right on all counts Dan, and they use TONS of salt in Ontario. I have had a few occasions last winter where traction control and the Cubes VDC helped greatly to maintain control with the stock Toyos. Also after further investigation into the winter tire issue, found out from Nissan and the local tire shops, the 195/60R15 is the same circumference as the 195/55R16. Nissan dealer price on winter steel rims and winter tires was $1100.00 for four. The best deal I found wasnt the Nexens and the Costco rims(Walmart charges extra for mount and balance AND to change over the rims and Costco only sells the multi-fit rims in 15 inch and they dont fit the Cube. The calipers rub on the rims.) The tire shop I went with took the time to test fit the rims and had to order the proper ones and the tires I bought are Sailun Iceblazer WST-1 195/65R15. Total for EIGHT rims and EIGHT tires(We have two Cubes) was $1220.00. Thanks to Taunton Tire for putting in the extra effort and working with me to keep cos down while providing me with an above average tire for extreme snow service. I dont like the stock 16 inch size either they are almost double the price of more common 15 and 16 inch sizes. Have fun in the snow, I know I will!

It is supposed to be worse than normal even in B.C. (another La Nina year), and I don't want to total my '09 as I haven't seen any sign of 2012 models, and hear there won't be any due to the tsunami. The upside is that a Cube is a rarer sight on the roads, though I like having company.
